'My interests include cooking dogs'

I found this funny article on http://www.broadcaster.org.uk/section2/jokes/funnynews.html :

A survey of CV blunders reveals that job applicants are blowing their chances with gaffes such as listing their interests as "cooking dogs".

Experts found that 94% of job hunters risked missing out on vacancies through CV blunders such as poor spelling, grammar or presentation on their CVs.
Failure to use the comma led to embarrassing disclosures such as: "My interests include cooking dogs and interesting people."
In some cases, applicants' attempts to impress potential employers failed through the odd missed word, with phrases such as: "I was responsible for dissatisfied customers."
For others, the omission of a single letter consigned their CV to the dustbin: "I am a pubic relations officer."
From a sample of 450 CVs, researchers found that 81% were laden with spelling and grammatical errors, while nearly half were poorly laid out.
A mere six per cent were error-free, the study by career advisers Personal Career Management (PCM) concluded.
Mistakes were not confined to applicants for menial roles either - many of the CVs riddled with errors were drafted by CEOs, professionals and recent graduates, researchers said.
Corinne Mills, managing director of PCM, said: "Many of the people whose CVs end up in the waste paper bin are perfectly capable of doing the job. However, a poor CV means they will not get the opportunity to prove it.
"Why would anyone want to employ a lawyer or a secretary who makes spelling mistakes or errors? If they can't pay attention to their own CV, why would you trust them to work on any of your documents?"

LOL. Just a little something to brighten up your day!

Men of Awards Season 2011

Trust me, I would never forget the men when it comes to the red carpet! I didn't really have time to get a whole bunch of photos, but here are some of my favourite men on the red carpet this year.

Jeremy Renner at the Golden Globes

Ryan Gosling in Ferragamo at the Golden Globes

My Favourite Red Carpet People of Awards Season 2011

lw.laurawatson@gmail.com
Woah! I am so tired after spending hours finding as many photos as I can of my 4  favourite ladys of the red carpet throughout the past awards season. Each of these girls stood out for me, each in different ways. I was going to do 5, including Natalie Portman, but I decided against it, considering her poor showing at the Golden Globes. So, lets start with no. 4.

No. 4:  Emma Stone
Emma at the Critics' Choice awards in Balenciaga

Emma at the Golden Globes in Calvin Klein

Emma in Lanvin at the Baftas

Emma at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in Chanel

No. 3:  Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer in L'Wren Scott at the Critics' Choice Awards

Jennifer at the Golden Globes in Louis Vuitton

Jennifer in Prabal Gurung at the Directors' Guild Awards

Jennifer in Oscar de la Renta at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards

Jennifer at the Academy Awards in Calvin Klein
No. 2: Mila Kunis
Mila in Vera Wang at the Golden Globes

Mila at the People's Choice Awards in J.Mendel

Mila in Victoria Beckham at the AFI Awards

Mila at the SAGs in Alexander Mc Queen

Mila at the Oscars in Elie Saab

And No. 1 is...

No.1:  Hailee Steinfeld
Hailee is absolutely gorgeous and I love her style so much. She really impressed me throughout awards season because of her sophisticated choices. Yet, she still managed to surprise me with her Prada dress at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards. It was so fun, so summery that it reminded me that she is so young and she likes to mix it up. She was amazing in True Grit and her red carpet choices were always wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

Hailee at the Bafta Britannia Awards in 2010 (O.K., O.K., this is not, strictly speaking, actually awards season, but I love her dress so much, that I had to add it in!) In Phillip Lim 3.1

Hailee in Marchesa at the Critics' Choice Awards

Hailee in Prabal Gurung at the Golden Globes

Hailee at the AFI Awards in Chloé

Hailee in Prada at the SAGs

Hailee at the BAFTA Los Angeles Awards Season Tea Party in Marc Jacobs
Hailee at the Baftas in Miu Miu

Hailee in Marchesa at the Oscars

Congrats, ladies on being so imprssive throughout awards season!!

Red Carpet Round-Up : The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

As 'awards season' is well and truly over, I will do a round-up of some of my favourite looks this year. The shows that I will cover are the Critics' Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors' Guild Awards and the Academy Awards (Oscars). I will show what I think is the Good, the Bad and the Ugly (in my opinion!). Feel free to comment and/or criticise me, or send me an e-mail at lw.laurawatson@gmail.com - I would love to hear your opinions!
I will soon put up a post regarding my favourite red carpet stars of this awards season.

Red Carpet Round-Up: The Ugly

O.K., O.K.,  as with the bad section, I really do hate having to point out that someone is ugly. But, in my defense, Christina is not ugly, but this look is so, so ugly.

Christina Aguilera at the Golden Globes in Zuhair Murad
Is it just me, or does Ms. Aguilera always wear lace? This is a lace-type thing that she has on, and I really hate it. Her hair is so devoid of anything interesting, it's just so boring! And that red lipstick.. It's just all bad, bad, bad. What a pity.

Red Carpet Round-Up: The Bad

I hate writing about people looking bad, but it has to be done to keep everyone on their toes! As always, drop me a line at lw.laurawatson@gmail.com if you think that I made a mistake or forgot something!

Now, I do actually like Kim Kardashian's choices on the red carpet, to be honest (When she tries to cover herself up). But in Vera Wang at the Critics' Choice Awards she just looked tramp-ish. I don't know what that fabric is called, but it always looks cheap, and I expected more from red-carpet showings. Tut tut.

Natalie Portman is one of my favourite actresses ever, and she almost never looks bad on the red carpet. At the Golden Globes, however, Nat looked bad in her Viktor and Rolf gown. Maybe it was the rose, or the necklace, or that stupid fabric, but this look would have looked awful on anyone. Maybe maternity wear is a sorry situation, but we have come to expect much more from Ms. Portman. If it is any consilation, her hair is very pretty.

I hear that, for most people, Catherine Zeta Jones' Monique Lhuillier gown at the Golden Globes went down a treat, but I thought that I was a disaster. Catherine looked pretty, but I didn't like her hair. And the dress? All I'll say is: When can I have my curtains back, Mrs. Douglas?!

Up soon: the ugly..

Red Carpet Round-Up: The Good

My favourite part of blogging: Writing about beautiful clothes!

THE GOOD -- In no particular order!

Emma Stone looks absolutely fantastic in Balenciaga at the Critics' Choice Awards. I was so impressed with her outfit- she looks so grown-up! She was certainly an obvious choice to appear in my 'good' section!

Here's Angelina Jolie at the Golden Globes. She looks amazing in the Atelier Versace gown. Angie is so pretty and usually looks good on the red carpet (I love black, so naturally I would love her choices). But rarely does she looks gorgeous, which is just what she looks here. Inspiring.

Another somewhat surprise at the Golden Globes was Olivia Wilde from House looking fantastic in Marchesa. I adore her hair, and it is such a great look on her. Of course, Olivia would look good in a bin bag. So jealous.

Another young brunette looking great this year was Mila Kunis. Here she is in Alexander McQueen at the Screen Actors' Guild Awards. I have the original AMQ dress beside it to show what a difference adding that belt made to the look. It is astonishing. Mila said that that dress was the most comfortable she has ever worn, and I thank her and/or her stylist for adding that wonderful belt!

Here is Reese Witherspoon in Armani Privé at the Oscars. Reese is another lady that always looks amazing, but she surprised me with her hairstyling choice. I love her dress too, but this is a perfect example that it is about the whole look together, not just the dress.

Here is the lovely Michelle Williams at the Oscars. She is wearing a gorgeous Chanel couture dress that almost looks like it was made for her. Michelle has always been one of the people that I look forward to seeing on the red carpet, but to be honest I wasn't too fond of any of her looks up to that point. But she really redeemed herself at the Oscars. Her entire look is perfect, the make-up suits the dress down to the ground. Well done, Ms. Williams!

When Cate Blanchett arrives at the Oscars in Givency, everything stops. Probably the most consistent actress in red carpet fashion looked ah-mazing at the Oscars this year. There are no words. In the designer that made Audrey Hepburn the most fashionable woman ever, Cate Blanchett is reaching the heights of Ms. Hepburn. Yeah, seriously.

Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars in Calvin Klein. That body. That make-up. That dress. That hair. THAT BODY!! This girl, seriously, can do no wrong. Oh, and did I mention that Jennifer's body is amazing?!

Quickly becoming my biggest girl crush of the moment is none other than Hailee Steinfeld, who wowed in Marchesa at the Oscars. I loved all of her choices throughout the awards season, but this is my favourite. She is so adorable, yet beautiful far beyond her years. This look is age-appropriate, and it is almost strange that she doesn't look out of place at the Oscars in a haute couture gown. It's quite embarrassing really, that she is a whole 2 years younger than me. I want her closet!

So, there we have it! My favourite looks of the awards season. Of course, there were many more, but these were the ones that I could choose as being absolutely perfect. Coming up next: The bad and the ugly of awards season.

My First Post

Hi everyone. I have to say that it is quite weird to be writing this! I have been thinking about starting a blog for a good while now, and I'm really happy to get started with it.
Part one: What my blog will function as: I am very interested in becoming a journalist when I am older, so by writing down 'titbits', (or by writing down anything really!) I can develop my own personal style. Of course, I will have the freedom here to write about anything at all I wish; When I start in my chosen profession, I won't have that luxury. I will write different pieces, about a hugely varied amount of topics: I plan on doing film, book and television reviews; some fashion journalism; entertainment news stories; opinion-style essays on political issues; reaction to current news stories, etc. As you can possibly gather, I am a person of varied tastes and interests, and I'm sure that that will shine through in my posts.
Part two: ''My Life'' / ''Me''
Name: Laura Watson
Country of residence: Ireland
Age: 15
Family: My parents are both still alive and married; I have two older brothers
Favourites
Food: Chocolate? Or kiwis.. yummm..
Hobbies: Reading, writing, public speaking, karate, discovering things, going to concerts/plays and... blogging.
School subjects: History and economics
Music: Paramore, The Police, R.E.M., Radiohead ('Creep' is just a whole bunch of awesomeness rolled into 3mins)
Books: I like mostly non-fiction- biographies and memoirs, But I'm a fan of the Harry Potter series too.
Films: 'Juno' is probably my favourite film ever- it's just so quotable. I like lots of others, like Brokeback Mountain, All About Eve, Casablanca etc. About Juno, it's probably worth mentioning here that the name of my blog- 'Honest to Blog'- is named after a line from Juno. Juno rings her best friend, Leah, and tells her that she is pregnant. Leah then replies: ''What? Honest to blog?''. I think that the reaction of the Leah character when told that her best friend is pregnant is so fantastically laid-back, and it pretty much encompasses the attitudes of my generation perfectly. I love it so much.
Fashion designers: I like Erdem, Isabel Marant, Jason Wu, Rodarte, Stella McCartney and Celine. I love wearable, but edgy and sexy clothes. Personally however, I never dress sexily. My style is quite old-fashioned and very conservative. I don't think that everyone should dress like me, but I don't have enough confidence to wear really revealing clothing, to be honest (to blog!)!

Part three: I attend boarding school, so I will only have new posts at the weekend. Hopefully I would get two posts done at the weekend, but this will differ from week to week. Anyway, it's about quality, not quantity! (But I do fear that I am lacking in both of these areas.)

I am really excited about creating this new blog. Nobody will probably ever read it, but 'you never know'. I am sure that it will feel good to get my feelings and opinions out there. But if anyone is reading this, can you please send me an e-mail on lw.laurawatson@gmail.com I would love to hear from you, only if you have only read it once. I'd love to hear your opinions, suggestions, or if you just wanted me to know that you're out there. It would honestly mean so much to me if you did e-mail me, so don't hesitate at all!

I feel that this is the start of a really exciting journey for me personally. Most of my family and friends don't really share many of the same opinions as me. Because I have so many different ones, I have different friends that suit the different sides of me. But here, I can express my entire rainbow of thoughts to whoever or whatever is out there, or not. And remember, rainbows are colourful. And this will not be a place where I can sulk or dramatize everything in my life. I can write about that things that I like: the arts and politics, mainly.

That's it for now. I probably (hopefully) have my second (but first official) post up tomorrow. Best of luck all.

Laura. X
